Internationally
acclaimed guitarist John Etheridge, formed the 'hot club' style group in
1998 as a personal tribute to the great violinist Stephane Grappelli, with
whom he was associated for many years, and takes the gypsy form to new and
inspiring places.
John is joined by;
Chris Garrick (violin) who has revitalised jazz violin playing so that it
has been rejuvenated for the 21st century. Whilst still able to play in
the tradition established by Stephane Grappelli he has forged his own style,
which reflects his contemporary interests. Chris currently teaches jazz
violin at the Royal Academy and the Royal College of Music.
Dave Kelbie (rhythm guitar), who has acquired an international reputation
as a promoter and performer of Gypsy music. His rhythm guitar is a joy in
itself, firm but relaxed, clearly executed but never obtrusive. Dave knows
exactly the best chord voicing for every moment and will add spice with
the occasional flourish or series of brisk arpeggios reminiscent of Eddie
Lang.
Andy Crowdy (bass) has been a constant presence on the British jazz scene
for many years, as a bassist, guitarist, teacher, composer and arranger.
Andy has a Masters Degree in composition and 20th Century Music. He has
made countless studio recordings and live appearances, as well as films,
TV and radio with many of the best musicians in the UK.
"Delightful tribute to Stephane Grappelli from his long-time guitarist.
Like the late master himself it refuses to dwell on well-worn early hits,
but draws material from half a century of popular song. Violinist Christian
Garrick brings off the difficult task of suggesting Grappelli's style without
slavishly imitating it." The Observer
